Tool tips · Assessing yourself

How good a coach are you, actually?

Most coaches have never been assessed on anything except results. This is where that changes.

A hundred questions across the ten coaching domains, answered once, away from a session.

When

Once, in a quiet twenty minutes. Not on the drive home from training.

Why

It is the baseline everything else is measured against. Without it, every later number has nothing to be compared to.

The mistake most coaches make

The commonest mistake is doing this after a bad session. You will mark yourself down across the board, produce a baseline that describes one Tuesday rather than a coach, and every comparison you make for the next two years will be against a number you set while annoyed. Do it on a day you are not coaching.

Without one

  • ·"I think I have improved"
  • ·No way to test it
  • ·The only evidence is results, which are mostly other people

With one

  • Ten domains, dated
  • A second reading to compare against
  • Disagreement between the two is the useful part
What a baseline is for

In practice

A coach rated themselves 87 on Communication here. A season of their own logs later put it at 56. That 31-point gap is the most useful thing the product has ever told them, and it only exists because they did this first.
