Minutes, honestly counted, before anyone asks you about them

Build the XI on a pitch, period by period, and the minutes come out on their own.

Laurie Griffin··1 min read·Written for coaches

Fixtures, the team sheet on a drag-and-drop pitch, periods, minutes, goals and the instruction you gave before kick-off.

When

Team sheet before kick-off, everything else afterwards.

Why

Minutes are derived from the periods a player was on for, so they cannot be forgotten and cannot quietly favour the players you remember best.

The mistake most coaches make

Trusting your memory of who played and for how long. Every coach believes they rotate fairly and roughly half of them are wrong, not through favouritism but because the players you think about most are the ones you remember substituting.

  1. 1

    Pick the format and formation

  2. 2

Drag the XI onto the pitch

  3. 3

Set the shape for each period

  4. 4

    Minutes are derived, not typed

Where the minutes come from

In practice

Drag the side onto the pitch for the first half, hit "start this period with the same side" for the second, and take off whoever came off. Minutes for all fourteen players are then calculated, not typed.
